Where I Have Been
How I Arrived In The Dartmouth/Sunapee/Upper Valley Area
How I like it Here
I was raised in the small upstate town of Granville, New York, "Colored Slate Capitol Of The World," close to the border of Vermont. After graduating from Granville High School, I attended the State University of New York at Potsdam, majoring in music education at SUNY Posdam's Crane School of Music. I later received a Masters degree from Potsdam and spent a year of doctoral studies at Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington.
As a college student and then as a beginning public school music teacher, I was a camp counselor at Camp Passumpsic on Lake Fairlee in Ely, Vermont. I loved the beauty of Vermont and New Hampshire and was drawm back to Camp Passumpsic for five summers. Our days off were spent in Hanover, New Hampshire, home of Dartmouth College's lovely campus green and the many stately trees lining Hanover's streets.
My wife, Nancy and I moved permanently to the Upper Valley/Dartmouth/Sunapee area in 1993 when I was offered a position as Music Director at Lebanon High School and it really felt like I was coming home. I now drive around Lake Fairlee occasionally. Camp Passumpsic is no longer there but the spot still elicits fond memories.
We were returning from Europe where I had been a full-time secondary school music teacher for many years with the Department of Defense Dependents Schools. My last teaching position "over there" was in Berlin, Germany during the time that the infamous wall came crumbling down and we, like so many others, helped in the process. Before that I had taught in Livorno, Italy and the German communities of Munich, Augsburg, Baumholder, and Ramstein. Our daughter, Jodi Sheeler, was born in Italy and our son, Derek Sheeler in Munich.
Now that I am a REALTORŪ, I am still involved in music. I've served as music director for a number of North Country Community Theatre productions summeer productions at the Lebanon Opera House including "Pajama Game," "Brigadoon," "Pirates Of Penzance," "Fiddler On The Roof," "Singin' In The Rain." What a fine group of dedicated musicians, actors, tech and production staff people. We had a 25 member orchestra last summer. I also play clarinet in the 70 member Upper Community Band and direct a fine choral group, the Bel Canto Chamber Singers. The arts are alive in the Upper Valley.
Please feel free to contact me for your real estate needs in Lebanon, Hanover, or any community within an hour's drive of the Dartmouth College/Upper Valley area. Regardless of whether I am working as a BUYER or as a SELLER AGENT, I'll offer honest, attentive service.
I think my experiences as a music educator with the Department of Defense Dependents Schools in Europe helped me to better understand the needs of people relocating to new areas. The military community members had to move and adjust to new "home towns" every three years or less. The kids in the schools arrived and departed all the time. The DoDDS teachers developed a caring and supportive environment to try and help them adjust to their new community.
